Capital Is Rob Bryant’s Healthy Addiction

“Many years ago I remember seeing these guys training Jiu-Jitsu, and while I wanted to try it, I was intimidated by the environment that they had created. Almost 10 years later I was overweight, had high cholesterol, could not sleep and could not find fulfillment or happiness in my personal life. I thought again about Jiu-Jitsu, and soon found a supportive friendly community at Capital. Within a year I lost 50 lbs, renewed the confidence in myself that I had in my youth, and most importantly, developed some very positive relationships. There truly is something special about the bond you develop with other practitioners. The community at Capital is filled with people from all walks of life, but each of us supports everyone else’s quest for self-improvement. What makes Capital special is our team environment; we are focused on each other’s goals and support one another both in and out of the gym.

“I’ve also immersed myself in the other programs Capital has to offer. CrossFit has taught me that gyms don’t need to be rooms full of machines, guys flexing in mirrors and everyone working out near each other – not with each other. I am an avid self-defense practitioner, take the boxing classes and my teenaged son is considering a mixed martial arts (MMA) competition. After 6 years at Capital MMA & Elite Fitness I still look forward to walking through those doors every chance I get.”

He is a 1st Degree Black Belt in Tang Soo Do and has experience in other styles such as Kung-Fu, Karate, Taekwon Do, American Kickboxing and Budokon. Hernán was born and raised in New Jersey, and relocated to Maryland in 2009. He was intrigued by how a smaller, weaker person was able to control him with ease and immediately began to look for a facility that exclusively taught BJJ. A short while later, he tried out his first official class and was instantly hooked. In 2010, Hernán decided to continue his Jiu Jitsu journey by joining Capital MMA and Elite Fitness where he is currently a Purple Belt and one of the assistant coaches. He is also giving back to his community by teaching BJJ classes at the same community center where he got his first glimpse of his newly found passion. He is also a certified personal trainer, as well as a certified Mixed Martial Arts Strength and Conditioning Specialist with the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM).

Capital Provides De Ninno The Opportunity Train For His Goals

“Jiu-Jitsu, first and foremost is a martial art. The most effective techniques – which we call ‘the fundamentals’ – are the tools we use to protect ourselves from every position. Jiu-Jitsu is effective against strikers, grapplers and even weapons. The Helio Gracie style of Jiu-Jitsu that we learn at Capital focuses on techniques which allow smaller people to protect themselves against larger, stronger aggressors. Of course if you are learning Jiu-Jitsu as a larger and stronger person, then you’ll begin replacing strength with technique to be a more efficient fighter. Like most Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu schools, many students at Capital choose to spar after each class. This allows us to fine tune our timing and execution at various levels of intensity.

“As a 40 year old with a job and family, the thing I love most about Capital is that I can train for my own goals at whatever level of intensity I see fit. If I want to compete, my instructor will put me through competition training. Competition is a great way – especially for the younger practitioners – to be tested, learn new trends and hone skills. But if I want to drill weapons defenses, just learn techniques or spar at lower levels of intensity, there isn’t any concern. Trusting your instructors and training partners is incredibly important for developing in this martial art.

“I’m a small guy, and I love the feeling that size and athleticism don’t matter. All that really matters is that I want to become the best version of myself. Jiu-Jitsu for life!”

Training For Chad Means Discovering Who He Really Is

“Training and fighting mixed martial arts under the Capital MMA banner has helped to make me the man I am today. The level of instruction, teamwork and guidance from the first day I arrived gave me the an advantage every time I stepped into the cage. I never had to worry about who was going to coach me during a training cycle, or who would drive me to weigh in, because the Capital team became my support system. After beating the man who would soon win his season on the Ultimate Fighter television show, I decided that my fighting days were over. MMA at Capital had taught me more about myself during the time that I was fighting than any other experience in my life. I learned about true determination, passion and the importance of having a team (from the person at the front desk who keeps you in good spirits, to the cornerman who makes you feel like you can always do another round.)

“After retiring with an undefeated record I found another side to this sport: coaching. Being able to mold someone – who has aspirations but no experience – into an individual who is ready to take on any challenge, is something that I would never have experienced without Capital. The first time someone I coached came up to me and said, “I could not have done this without you…”, was one of the proudest moments of my life. Now that I have realized the true potential of this sport I am committed to making sure that anyone that comes through Capital’s doors will have an opportunity to experience the same thing I did.”

It was before his final tour of duty in Iraq that he discovered CrossFit and became certified as a Level 1 Trainer. Instantly becoming hooked on the intensity of CrossFit workouts, Mike used it as his primary means of physical training for the rigors of combat. The results paid off tremendously. He was better equipped physically to carry heavy loads, over long distances, for a longer duration. Since then, he has been an adamant supporter of the CrossFit methodology.

In addition to CrossFit, Mike studies Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) and Muay Thai at Capital, and has two Muay Thai fights under his belt with a record of 2-0.
