Movember Superfights Organizer, Coach BJ Ketchem: “In 2012, I started raising money for Movember in honor of my father, who was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Due to the advances in medicine that are the result of the funding that organizations like Movember have secured, he successfully defeated cancer. I also participate because of the contributions they have made in other aspects of men’s health, particularly men’s mental health. This hits even closer because I have battled PTSD, anxiety and depression for many, many years.
“I am grateful for the support that I’ve received; it’s a large part of my life’s work to raise awareness for men’s health concerns, so that — hopefully — I can help others in need. This work has expanded the last few years, because of the trust and leadership of Chad Malone and Paul Herring, who have graciously opened the doors of Capital MMA/Lorton to hold a special day of Superfights! Also, none of this would be possible if it weren’t for our sponsors, Comfort One Shoes, Annandale Eye Care, SPARK Physiotherapy, Forged Performance, Once Upon a Coconut, and countless volunteers.

“This year the tradition will live on in a highly competitive team style tournament, featuring elite grapplers from across the Mid-Atlantic. The last two years we have raised over $13,000 for Movember, and this year we have set a bold goal of $10,000.
“Doors open at 9:30AM and fights start at 10:00AM this Saturday at Capital-Lorton. Entrance fee is a donation to our Movember page and cash donations will be collected at the door. And, if you can’t attend, no worries! One of our amazing volunteers, Alex Keeling, will be hosting a live stream of the event!! Also a special shout out to Tom Channon who has been instrumental in building community partnerships for the event.
“Thank you in advance for all your support!!”

Has your favorite Jiu-Jitsu coach started growing a ‘stache’? Have you heard talk in your classes of people competing in the 2024 Movember Superfights competition? Starting in 2003, with 30 men in Australia, the Movember movement was born to improve the discussion around and resources for men’s mental and reproductive health. It has grown over the years to include millions of people and fund over over 1,000 mens health projects worldwide. It is frequently represented by men growing their mustache for the month of November.
